True Allegiance is a Posture Not A Pledge

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”[Jesus] got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” Mark 4:35–41

Jesus and his disciples traveling by sea when a sudden and vicious storm comes with designs to sink them.

Twelve in a panic, Jesus asleep.

“Don’t you care?”

“Don’t you believe?”

A simple word spoken; calm.

Who is this? His Word makes the sea obey?

For the past nine months of Creekside Sundays we have been asking what it means to live into the simple promise that God’s Word lights our path, that he is a lamp that guides us as we walk with him. The necessary ingredient for this formula?  Trust.

With stadium lights, floodlights or daylight we can see for miles, plot our course for days or even longer. We could, I suspect, begin to think that we can make it on our own.

But God wants us in the present, with him, with his Word as a lamp, guiding us in the slow, deliberate, intimate, powerful, walk with him. In a world where many vie for our allegiance, there is none worthy of receiving it than the one who makes the very paths we walks and speaks light into being. What a joy to say “yes,” I will walk wherever you shine your light, and if you do not shine it, we will not go, I give you my allegiance, lead me.

Peace, hope and love
