Is The World Spinning Out Of Control?

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?  Matthew 6:25-27

Turn on the TV, pick up a newspaper or even your phone and it is easy to begin to think that the world seems to be spinning out of control.

In the wake of recent world events, I came across a called Wild Things by Wendell Berry.

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light.
For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Berry’s words echo the words of Jesus, “can you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

The world seems to be spiraling out of control — God is not. God has called you to himself because, he greatly loves you, and he loves the world that seems to be spiraling out of control. God’s Church exists because the world is spiraling out of control. We are here to be the presence of God, presence of hope, presence of love, presence of peace — our lives grounded in the narrative of God, especially when things are spiraling out of control.

Carrying God’s hope in such a way that people cannot help but to ask us the reason for our hope, and we always prepared to give a reason for the hope that is within us. And the reason is God, Jesus the author of our story, the Holy Spirit living within us.

Peace, hope and love
